The history of Australian rules football in Cambridge dates back to the 1850s when Tom Wills, the creator the sport, was a student at Cambridge University. Whilst studying here, he experienced the various forms of 'football' played in England. On returning to Australia, he then invented the rules of the game with the aim of keeping fit during the cricket off season! CUARFC was then founded in 1908, with the first Varsity game on 18th March 1911. No records exist of a further Varsity until 1921, when the game became a regular fixture. The first women's varsity was played in 2018, resulting in a draw.
